Growing Together: Community Wisdom Driving Gabay Kalinga's Impact
The Heart of Our Work: Community-Led Transformation
In South Palawan, where Indigenous knowledge meets rich biodiversity, communities lead remarkable initiatives for sustainable development. Gabay Kalinga Foundation, established in March 2021 as the community partnership arm of Lionheart Farms, walks alongside these communities as they design and implement solutions that honor both cultural heritage and environmental stewardship.
"Launching the foundation is very much about how we can leverage the participation of partners who want to help," explains Christian Eyde Moeller, Chairman of Gabay Kalinga.
"Our dialogues are always about how we can engage the community and involve all the stakeholders in the process of delivering responsible and sustainable progress for the people, the environment, and the economy."
Our approach centers on recognizing existing community strengths rather than imposing external solutions. When Indigenous leaders share traditional farming practices, we document this wisdom. When parents advocate for educational resources, we collaborate to expand access. This foundation of mutual respect creates programs that reflect community priorities and knowledge.
Building on Community Wisdom: Our Three Core Areas
"The success stories emerging from our three-pillar approach – Educate, Elevate, and Engage – demonstrate how targeted interventions can create ripple effects of positive change, from improving literacy rates among Indigenous parents to establishing sustainable livelihood opportunities for entire communities," Moeller shares.
Education: Knowledge Exchange That Honors All Voices
Education thrives when it builds on existing community wisdom while opening doors to new opportunities. Indigenous parents who participate in Katulduan (Tutorial Classes) bring valuable life experience even as they strengthen literacy skills. The program's 93% completion rate in 2024 reflects the commitment of participants who recognize education as a tool for community advancement.
"The foundation's achievements this year exemplify the power of collaborative action – from empowering 765 young minds through our Book Caravan program to enabling 643 families with sustainable backyard gardens, and training 114 community members in organic farming practices," Moeller notes with pride.
The Book Caravan brings reading materials directly to remote public elementary schools, reaching 1,830 pupils across 17 schools in 2024. Rather than positioning reading as an external value, this initiative connects with community storytelling traditions while expanding access to written resources.
Community empowerment programs create spaces for gender awareness and violence prevention discussions led by local voices. Mothers participating in these sessions identify their rights and strengths within cultural contexts, developing community-appropriate responses to family challenges.
Sustainable Livelihoods: Economic Resilience Through Traditional Wisdom
Economic initiatives succeed when they build on existing community knowledge and practices. Backyard gardening participants blend traditional agricultural understanding with new techniques, creating food security systems that reflect local environmental conditions. In 2024, 643 parents, teachers and students across four schools strengthened these skills.
"What truly sets our journey apart is the integration of traditional knowledge with modern sustainable practices, ensuring that progress doesn't come at the cost of cultural identity," Moeller emphasizes.
The Kabalikat Farmers program connects coconut sap harvesters with sustainable market opportunities. Rather than disrupting traditional harvesting practices, this partnership enhances economic returns while maintaining cultural knowledge.
Community skills development in biochar production and handicraft creation builds on existing practices while introducing sustainable innovations. Indigenous artisans lead the handicraft training, ensuring that economic opportunities preserve cultural techniques and aesthetics.
Community Engagement: Environmental Stewardship and Cultural Preservation
Environmental programs recognize that communities possess generations of knowledge about local ecosystems. Tree planting initiatives incorporate Indigenous understanding of native species and their relationships to watersheds. Coastal clean-up participants bring essential knowledge about marine resources and their cultural significance.
"Our vision of sustainable development has materialized through strategic programs that not only preserve Indigenous cultural heritage but also create pathways to economic empowerment, touching the lives of over 1,500 beneficiaries across our focus areas of education, livelihood development, and environmental stewardship," says Moeller.
The Mobile Birth Certificate Registration removes barriers to essential documentation, enabling community members to access government services while maintaining their cultural identity. Unlike approaches that require community members to navigate complex external systems, this program brings services directly to where people live.
The Mission from the Heart outreach exemplifies true partnership, with community members identifying health priorities and participating in service delivery alongside medical professionals. This approach honors community wisdom about wellness while expanding access to care.
Community Partnerships: The Foundation of Lasting Change
Meaningful change emerges when multiple knowledge systems work together. Gabay Kalinga Foundation collaborates with diverse partners—from Indigenous community leaders to academic institutions like Western Philippines University, from local government units to national agencies like DENR and PCA. Each partner brings unique perspectives and resources, creating programs that reflect community priorities.
"Our partnership with DANIDA, PBSP, and local government units has strengthened our capacity to deliver lasting impact, particularly in revolutionizing the coconut farming industry to benefit our Indigenous communities," Moeller shares.
These partnerships demonstrate that sustainable development happens through relationships of mutual respect rather than one-way assistance. When military personnel from Western Command participate in community initiatives, they learn from local wisdom even as they contribute specialized skills. When local government officials engage with Indigenous leaders, both governance systems strengthen.
Shaina Magdayao, acclaimed actress and humanitarian who serves on Gabay Kalinga Foundation's Board of Trustees, emphasizes the alignment of values that drives these partnerships: "It's very rare na makatatagpo tayo ng mga tao na aligned with our dreams and aspirations. And sila (Christian Moeller and Cecille Chang) 'yon. And when they asked me to be part of this foundation, of course syempre natuwa ako because it was such an honor to be invited."
Creating Shared Value Through Community Leadership
The collaboration between Lionheart Farms and community members through Gabay Kalinga Foundation demonstrates how businesses and communities thrive together when relationships center on mutual respect and shared goals. Economic development, cultural preservation, and environmental stewardship reinforce each other when communities lead the way.
"The partnership between Lionheart Farms and Gabay Kalinga Foundation continues to prove that business success and community development can go hand in hand, creating shared value that uplifts all stakeholders," Moeller affirms.
In South Palawan, sustainable development emerges not from external programs but from communities designing their own pathways forward. Gabay Kalinga Foundation walks alongside these communities, supporting initiatives that honor cultural heritage while creating new possibilities.
"As we reflect on 2024, Gabay Kalinga Foundation remains steadfast in its commitment to transforming lives through the support of Lionheart Farms, creating meaningful change in South Palawan's most vulnerable communities," Moeller states. "Looking ahead, we remain committed to expanding our reach while deepening our impact."

Magdayao shares this vision for expansion: "With [Gabay Kalinga], I want to take this opportunity to help. Sama-sama nating tutulungan ang Rizal, Palawan. I promise to use my influence for good." She envisions even broader impact in the future: "[Let's] claim na hindi lang Palawan ang tutulungan natin. Through Gabay Kalinga, tutulungan natin ang buong Pilipinas."
